Cupping Therapy: What It Is & Why It Works

You may have seen it before—those perfectly round marks on athletes' backs, shoulders, or necks that look like they got into a friendly tussle with a giant octopus. While it may look intense, those circles are the result of cupping therapy—a safe, time-tested method used by massage therapists to help relieve pain, tension, and stagnation in the body.

At our clinic, we offer cupping therapy as a powerful complement to massage therapy. If you’re curious, here’s what it’s all about.

How Cupping Works

Cupping involves placing special cups on your skin to create suction. This gentle pulling action lifts the skin and underlying tissues, promoting:

  • Increased blood flow

  • Looser, more relaxed muscles

  • Faster recovery from soreness or injury
    Improved lymphatic drainage

Think of it as a reverse massage—rather than pressing in, we’re lifting up, creating space for tissue to decompress and heal.

What It Feels Like

Most people describe cupping as a pulling or stretching sensation. It’s not painful, and we can adjust the suction level based on your comfort. Many clients find it deeply relaxing.

Afterward, you might notice round marks on your skin. These aren’t bruises—they’re called cupping marks and usually fade in a few days. They’re a sign of increased circulation and muscle release.

Why People Try It

Cupping can be helpful for:

  • Neck, shoulder, or back tension

  • Post-workout soreness

  • Fascial tightness or scar tissue

  • Chronic pain and stiffness

  • Supporting chiropractic adjustments

When We Skip Cupping

Cupping isn’t for everyone. We’ll avoid it if you:

  • Are taking blood thinners

  • Have open wounds, sunburn, or fragile skin

  • Are in the first trimester of pregnancy

  • Have severe edema or a bleeding disorder

We always make sure cupping is a safe and beneficial option for your body.

Curious About Cupping?

If you’re interested in trying cupping, ask about adding it to your next massage session! It’s a simple, safe, and effective way to support your healing and recovery, whether you’re dealing with tight muscles or just want to see what all the fuss is about.

Got questions? You can email our massage therapist, Kate, or ask at your next appointment—we’re happy to help.

THE KLUG FAMILY

"I was so accustomed to the pain in my back that I frequently ignored it until I almost could not walk at times. A friend referred me to Frain Chiropractic, and it has made a world of difference for me! I haven’t had to feel chronic pain in my lower back and have been bringing the whole family as well for the last 2½ years, so they too can enjoy the benefits of preventative wellness, better health and less illness. We all look forward to our appointments and do not know what we would do without them!

Thank you, Drs. Frain!"
